Microsoft began laying off nearly 3% of its workforce, or 6,000 employees Tuesday.
“We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace,” a Microsoft spokesperson told The Hill newspaper.
The tech company, based in the state of Washington, has 228,000 workers globally, per Microsoft’s latest figures. About 126,000 of those workers are in the U.S., thousands of which will be impacted by the cuts. Some employees have already received layoff notices.
Microsoft laid off workers earlier this year, which were performance-based job cuts across multiple departments. Early last year, Microsoft let about 1,900 employees go at Activision Blizzard and Xbox.
Tuesday’s layoffs are the largest cuts Microsoft has made since January 2023, when it cut around 10,000 positions, which was nearly 5% of its workforce.
