A five-floor townhouse once owned by music icon Bob Dylan is up for sale in New York, with an asking price of $3 million.
Per the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, the 84-year-old singer-songwriter lived in the Manhattan home between 1986 and 2000.
“Rare architectural offering”
Listed by the real-estate agency Sotheby’s International Realty, the 4,500-square-foot, nine-room house is located on West 139th Street, on Harlem’s famous Strivers’ Row.
Officially known as the St. Nicholas Historic District, Strivers’ Row is a group of late-19th-century townhouses that are “collectively recognized as gems of New York City”, according to the landmark’s official website.
Sotheby’s describes the West 139th Street property, which was designed by the celebrated U.S. architect Stanford White, as a “rare architectural offering” that “links 132 years of cultural and architectural history to the present”.
Built in 1893, the home has been “remarkably preserved, restored, and future-proofed over its 13 decades”, the realtor says.
Sotheby’s goes on: “This five-bedroom townhouse blends 19th-century craftsmanship with 21st-century upgrades: zoned central HVAC, radiant-heated bathrooms, CitiQuiet windows, and a private gated carport with a second parking space accessed via Strivers’ Row’s famed residents-only alley.”
“Did he sit on the stoop?”
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, the house’s current co-owner, Elaina Richardson, said: “When someone as famous as Dylan has lived in your house, it’s hard not to imagine – did he sit on the stoop?”
One of the most influential musicians of the past seven decades, Dylan is best known for iconic songs such as 1963’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” and 1964’s “The Times They Are a-Changin’”.
A writer of powerful lyrics infused with social and political commentary, the Minnesota native was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016, “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.
Dylan’s early career was recently chronicled in the Oscar-nominated biopic A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet as the singer-songwriter.
