Believe it or not, there’s more on Netflix this month than the long-awaited Stranger Things 5.

Alongside that final season another standout is The Abandons, a gritty new western premiering Thursday, December 4.

Set in Oregon in 1850, The Abandons follows a tightknit community of diverse frontier families who have carved doesn’t last long when a ruthless, corrupt economic power sets its sights on their territory. The goal: drive these families out and take the land for themselves.

According to the official synopsis, the settlers soon find themselves with their backs against the wall and begin embracing the doctrine of ‘Manifest Destiny’. Forced to unite as one group, they band together to defend their homes, reclaim what’s theirs and fight back by any means necessary. What follows is a battle for survival that blends frontier justice, moral ambiguity, and the harsh realities of the American West.

Who is in The Abandons?

The series brings serious star power. The cast is led by Lena Headey (300, Game of Thrones), Gillian Anderson (The X-Files, Sex Education), Nick Robinson (Jurassic World), Mark Menchaca (Ozark, The Creator), and Patton Oswalt (Eternals).

Behind the scenes, the show is penned by Kurt Sutter, the creator of Sons of Anarchy, which hints at the tone viewers can expect: raw, violent, character-driven storytelling steeped in gray morality.

With prestige names, a compelling premise and Sutter’s signature edge, The Abandons is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s most intriguing late-year releases.
