The New York Yankees could be in the market for a third baseman around the trade deadline. They have often been connected to Nolan Arenado in rumors.

Despite reports that the Yankees are not interested in Arenado, he could still be their best choice to play third base. The Yankees could have George Lombard Jr. up from the minor leagues next season to take over in the hot corner, but that will not help them win the World Series this year. FanSided’s Vanessa Serrao tabbed Arenado as the top choice for the Yankees to solve their third base problems.

“Arenado would be the No. 1 choice for the Yankees to go after with the many defensive and offensive accolades he has earned in his career,” wrote Serrao. “The 34-year-old veteran is an eight-time All-Star, a five-time Silver Slugger, a 10-time Gold Glove winner, and a six-time Platinum Glove winner.”

Even if Arenado is an elite option at third base, he may not even be available. The St. Louis Cardinals are outplaying expectations and may not be sellers at the deadline. Not to mention how much it would take to acquire Arenado and his $260 million contract.

Oswaldo Cabrera was serving as the Yankees’ third baseman, but his season is likely over after a devastating ankle injury a couple of weeks ago. The Yankees got DJ LeMahieu back, but he may not be an everyday player for them. Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s return should provide more clarity on what the Yankees plan to do at third base.

A trade for a third baseman is certainly a possibility for the Yankees. However, they may not be able to justify trading for Arenado, considering his contract and the Cardinals’ potential asking price.
