Harry Potter was the hero of a generation. The boy who lived took on Lord Voldemort, the most powerful dark wizard of all time, and defeated him before even turning 18. Alongside his friends Ron and Hermione, Harry never had a peaceful year at Hogwarts – but even that hasn’t been enough to make him the UK’s most beloved literary hero.

According to Daily Express, a new Amazon UK poll reveals that Frodo Baggins from The Lord of the Rings didn’t manage to top the list either. Instead, the winner is a well-known secret agent who’s not only had literary success, but has also graced the silver screen ever since Sean Connery first played him: James Bond, the creation of Ian Fleming.

Suave, womanizing (although since Daniel Craig this has changed somewhat), and licensed to kill, Bond may be fictional, but he continues to command both respect and national pride in the UK. Frodo came in second place, with Harry Potter ranked third.

Here are the UK’s favorite literary heroes:

  • James Bond (James Bond) – 27%
  • Frodo Baggins (The Lord of the Rings) – 26%
  • Harry Potter (Harry Potter) – 24%
  • Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes) – 19%
  • Matilda Wormwood (Matilda) – 16%

The top three names on the list are all set to remain prominent on screen. Amazon has secured the rights to James Bond and will oversee the franchise’s creative direction. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Discovery is preparing The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a new live-action film. As for Harry Potter, HBO is developing a new series.
