Since it hit theaters just over two weeks ago, F1: The Movie has raced full throttle towards the top spots in Brad Pitt’s career box-office chart.
Directed by Joseph Kisinski, Apple Studios’ motor-racing drama stars Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a veteran Formula 1 driver who is persuaded out of retirement, years after a crash had seemingly ended his career.
Alongside Pitt, F1’s cast includes Damson Idris as Joshua Pearce, a rookie driver who is Hayes’ team-mate in the fictional APX Grand Prix team. The film also stars Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem and Tobias Menzies.
How much has F1: The Movie taken at the box office?
First released on June 25, F1 enjoyed a stellar opening weekend, taking nearly $56 million at the box office in the U.S. and Canada, and $88m worldwide.
Per Reuters, this is Apple’s most successful opening weekend since it began making Hollywood films. It outstrips the performance of other major releases by the tech giant, such as 2023’s Oscar-nominated Killers of the Flower Moon.
Overall, F1 has now earned $309m globally since June 25, according to data compiled by Box Office Mojo.
That places the movie within sight of Pitt’s five highest-grossing films worldwide – albeit with track to make up if it is to take top spot on the podium, currently occupied by 2013’s action-horror movie World War Z.
Pitt’s top-grossing films as an actor:
- World War Z (2013): $540 million
- Troy (2004): $497 million
- Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005): $487 million
- Ocean’s Eleven (2001): $450 million
- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019): $377 million
It’s worth noting that Pitt also appeared in 2018’s smash-hit superhero film Deadpool 2, which took $734 million worldwide. However, we haven’t counted that towards this list as the 61-year-old only featured in a cameo role.
