Robin Wright, the acclaimed actress known for her powerhouse roles in House of Cards, Forrest Gump, and The Princess Bride, is making headlines again—but this time, it’s not for a new role.
In a candid interview with The Sunday Times, Wright opened up about her decision to leave the United States and settle along England’s serene coastline, calling the move “liberating” and life-changing.
Trading chaos for calm
Wright didn’t mince words when describing her departure from the US, referring to her home country as “a s***show.” She explained that life in America had become a relentless grind—“always rushing, always competing”—and that she often felt she was only getting “60 percent of what [she] wanted”. The move to England, she said, brought emotional stability and a renewed sense of freedom.
Now living with British-Australian architect Henry Smith, Wright says she’s found a quiet refuge far from the noise of Hollywood. “I love the quiet,” she told the paper. “And I’ve met my person. Finally.” Their love story began in a quintessentially British way—at a pub, where they jokingly introduced themselves with the line, “Who the f*** are you?”
Despite her newfound peace, Wright admits that adapting to British culture hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing. She’s been struck by the country’s rigid class system, where elite boarding schools and universities still shape social dynamics. “Why are you guys so obsessed with who went to this boarding school or that university?” she asked, baffled by the lingering social hierarchies.
Robin Wright says fighting for equal pay on “House of Cards” was “difficult.”
“They said, ‘We can’t pay you the same [as Kevin Spacey] as an actor, so we will make you exec producer and you can direct. We will give you three different paychecks.’ I asked, ‘Why can’t you pay me… pic.twitter.com/jMRaDPE0hW

Celebrity exodus
Wright’s move mirrors a growing trend among American celebrities seeking refuge in Europe following Donald Trump’s controversial reelection in 2024. Stars like Viggo Mortensen, Richard Gere, and Eva Longoria have also made the leap across the Atlantic.
But for Wright, the decision wasn’t political—it was personal. “I found what I needed in England: space, silence, and freedom,” she said.

What’s Next for Wright?
While she’s stepped away from the Hollywood spotlight, Wright isn’t done with storytelling. Her new Amazon Prime series The Girlfriend premieres September 10, and she’s already earning buzz for both her performance and directorial work.
