The Philadelphia Phillies have struggled a little bit in recent weeks. They are 3-7 in their last 10 games and have fallen behind the New York Mets in the National League East.

The news of Jose Alvarado’s 80-game PED suspension also didn’t help matters for the team. Now, the left-hander is ineligible for the postseason.

Philadelphia is going to need some help from the left side of their bullpen.

Brad Wakai of Sports Illustrated proposed the idea of the Phillies going after Los Angeles Angels left-hander Reid Detmers.

“The former 10th overall pick by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2020 draft was a flop as a starting pitcher, prompting the team to move him into the bullpen,” Wakai wrote.

“Philadelphia needs to be betting on the stuff of pitchers if they are going to replace Alvarado, and in that aspect, Detmers has been electric with a Stuff+ number of 110.”

Detmers is 1-2 with a 6.04 ERA this season in 22 appearances, but has recorded a save this year.

Needless to say, 2025 hasn’t exactly been kind to him. But perhaps a change of scenery to a winning environment could help rejuvenate him.

The 25-year-old left-hander made his Major League debut in 2021 with the Halos as a starter, but has since been transferred to the bullpen.

Without Alvarado, the Phillies are going to need another arm. Detmers is a good buy-low option that could help the Phillies out down the stretch, even in the midst of his struggles.

The Phillies need to catch the Mets, and with some key additions, they might be able to do just that.

We’ll see where the Phillies land at the trade deadline.
