The University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus told students to shelter in place on Sunday evening as a result of reports of an active shooter around the Thomas Cooper Library.

The university described the suspect as a white man about 6 feet tall who was wearing black pants, according to news reports.

“Defend yourself if you encounter the suspect,” the alert said. “Obey public safety officials’ commands.”

The university later said there is “no evidence” of an active shooter but that police are still searching the campus.

“Police are searching. Please continue to shelter in place until there is an all clear,” read an updated alert from the university.
