Sergio Ramos is still an active footballer with Monterrey in Mexico, yet he has now relaunched his musical career, releasing his first solo single, Cibeles. The former Real Madrid captain had been announcing for weeks that the song would drop on Sunday, August 31, marking his formal return to music after a 2023 collaboration with Los Yakis.

What and where is Cibeles?

If you were following Ramos at Real Madrid, you’ll likely be very aware that Cibeles is the name of the fountain (and goddess) in the Spanish capital where Los Blancos go to celebrate triumphs with their fans.

The track includes lines such as “I never wanted to leave, you asked me to fly”, which many fans have directly linked to his departure from Real Madrid. The video reinforces this reading, showing several moments from his time at the club. Another lyric says, “No one is indispensable, life teaches you that. A match lasts 90 minutes and I gave you 93 and more than that” – a clear nod to his iconic 93rd-minute goal in the 2014 Champions League final against Atlético Madrid.

On social media, conversation has quickly turned to the emotional undertones of the song and Ramos’s feelings surrounding his 2021 exit from Madrid. Since then, he has played for PSG, Sevilla and now Monterrey.

This release is set to mark the start of a genuine musical path for Ramos, who plans to dedicate more time to recording while continuing his playing career. In other words, he intends to pursue both in parallel. Listen to it here:

The defender from Camas also has more singles lined up – both solo projects and collaborations with friends in the industry such as Carin León, Maluma, J Balvin and Gente de Zona. León, the Mexican artist, had already hinted that a joint song with Ramos was on the way.
