The Boston Red Sox have finally done it.
Major League Baseball No. 1 prospect Roman Anthony has been called up by the Red Sox, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The 21-year-old outfielder is expected to join the team today in Boston as the Red Sox battle the Tampa Bay Rays.
Gold Glove award-winning outfielder Wilyer Abreu has been placed on injured list as the corresponding roster move.
Prior to his injury, Abreu was having a solid season. In 64 games, Abreu has 13 home runs and 32 RBI while slashing .245/.321/.471.
Anthony’s call-up has been a topic of conversation for a while and a spot has finally opened up with Abreu hitting the IL.

Anthony had 10 home runs and 29 RBI, slashing .288/.423/.491 in 58 games for Triple-A Worcester.
Anthony is known for his hitting skills more than his defensive skills, but the Red Sox were in need of more firepower.
Speaking of firepower, Anthony hit a 497-foot grand slam in a 10-4 win on June 7. Anthony told the media that he “got it and didn’t really miss it.”
Boston has had an underwhelming season thus far, sitting eight-and-a-half games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East with a 32-35 record.
Anthony should be in the lineup for what could be a season-altering series for the Red Sox.
