The Boston Red Sox should be looking to upgrade their roster in every possible way this upcoming offseason.
Last week, the Boston Red Sox traded slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants after months of frustration with his current role.
The Red Sox wanted Devers to play first base, but he wasn’t happy with the move, so now Boston will have to be looking for someone who can play that position this offseason.
One of the best first basemen in Major League Baseball, New York Mets’ Pete Alonso, could opt out of his two-year, $54 million contract this offseason. If he does, Conor Ryan from Boston.com thinks the Red Sox should try to sign him.
“If the Red Sox are looking for ways to replicate Devers’ pure pop at the plate, a slugger like Alonso makes plenty of sense,” Ryan wrote. “Alonso will likely opt out of his contract with New York this winter after teeing off against pitching this season. He is currently batting .293 and is on pace for 38 home runs and a whopping 135 RBI with the Mets in 2025. The 30-year-old righty could be a lock to swat 30-plus home runs over the Green Monster if he signs with the Red Sox. And with Boston’s first-base situation now in flux moving forward following Triston Casas’ knee injury, the Red Sox could secure for some stability (and proven production) there with a power hitter like Alonso.”

Alonso is a four-time All-Star and would give the Red Sox some more power in the middle of their lineup.
The Red Sox should do whatever it takes to sign Alonso this offseason, which could be the missing piece to a playoff run.
