Red Sox predicted to move on from two-time All-Star in trade with Yankees

The New York Yankees could be on the verge of a massive trade that would arguably make them World Series favorites.

Sure, despite an impressive 37-22 record in 2025, the Yanks are still looking ahead to an arduous postseason journey on the path to what they hope will be a second-consecutive World Series appearance. Moreover, if and when New York reaches that point, it’ll likely be facing off against a dominant juggernaut like the Los Angeles Dodgers or San Diego Padres.

But with the best offensive player in baseball on their side and a strong collection of supporting actors, New York has a strong chance to win it all this season, and one more crucial deal could enhance that likelihood significantly.

With New York’s bitter rival the Boston Red Sox going through a disappointing season, the Yanks might be presented with the surprising opportunity to swoop in and poach a two-time All-Star in his prime from Boston.

Newsweek’s Aaliyan Mohammed wrote about the idea on Tuesday.

The New York Yankees may be looking for infielders near the trade deadline,” Mohammad wrote. “The team has been using DJ LeMahieu and Jorbit Vivas at second base and plans to move Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to third base after Oswaldo Cabrera’s injury.”

“One player who could surprisingly be available is Alex Bregman of the Boston Red Sox. He signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox in the offseason, but is on the injured list right now. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are struggling and may very well be sellers by the time the July 31 deadline rolls around.”

“Bregman would be able to slot in as the everyday third baseman, allowing Chisholm to play second base, where he started the season. He would be a clear upgrade for their infield and will likely end up being a rental.”

“Adding him as a rental would cost the Yankees a lot of prospect capital as is, but adding him from the Red Sox would cost them even more. However, it is a price the Yankees may be willing to pay in order to maximize their chance at a World Series this year.”

Mohammad’s Bregman-to-Yankees pitch makes perfect sense from New York’s perspective, as the club has every reason to go all-in this year. Bregman was raking before his quad injury, and adding his bat and experience to an already-potent Yankees lineup would be a terrifying development for every other team in the American League.

The doubts surrounding any Bregman trade would stem from Boston’s willingness (or lack thereof) to cut ties with Bregman after such a short stint. His ability to opt out following the season is the one detail making a move possible, but on the whole, one would think the Red Sox have every intention of retaining Bregman, whose profile at the plate is an optimal fit with Fenway Park.

On the other hand, Boston’s brass has been all over the place since the season began, making curious depth chart decisions and in general presiding over a losing culture.

Trading Bregman would be a confusing move for the Red Sox, but doing so would be on-brand for the franchise in 2025.
