Rep. Andy Biggs says he thinks there could be bipartisan support to extend National Guard’s DC stay

Congressman Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., said Thursday that he thinks there could be bipartisan support in Congress to extend the National Guard’s stay in Washington, D.C.

“The bottom line is, the vast majority of Republicans in the House want to see this continued,” Biggs said on the “Just the News, No Noise” TV show. “By the way, I wouldn’t be surprised if you get some Democrats that have to vote for it too.”

President Donald Trump last month sent the National Guard into Washington, D.C. to help crack down on crime.

He has suggested sending the guard to other cities like Chicago to help with crime, but didn’t give a date for when that would happen.

Biggs said that Democratic D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser supports Trump’s actions and would favor an extension.

“The police union favors an extension,” Biggs said. “So this is one thing where I would guess you could get some bipartisan support where at least a few Democrats will come in. So if we lose a few Republicans, which I hope we don’t lose any…I think the Democrats might actually help us get over the hump on that.”
