Since bursting through into the public consciousness in the early 1980s, Rob Lowe has been a regular feature on television screens.

He’s played countless roles in both TV and film and is now a regular guest on all manner of podcasts and documentary series. Lowe is also a big movie buff and a devotee of classic Hollywood cinema. In a recent conversation on the Jom Boy Media podcast, Lowe was asked to name his ‘Mount Rushmore’ of actors.

It’s safe to say that he struggled to narrow the greats down to a four-name list…

“Obvious it’s subjective, No. 1 for me is Paul Newman. Then Robert Redford, Marlon Brando. And then you round it up with, probably a tie between Denzel [Washington] and Daniel Day-Lewis.”

“I’m gonna go with Denzel, because he’s done more work,” Lowe said, after agonizing over the decision.”

The decision to omit Day-Lewis caused some surprise from the interviewer, who questioned why he was excluding “one of the greatest character actors of all time.”

It’s certainly true that Day-Lewis is often cited as one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema, winning three Academy Awards and two Golden Globes. In 2014 he was knighted for his services to drama.

Despite that incredible CV, Day-Lewis has twice retired from the profession. In 2017 he gave up acting and embarked on a shoe-making apprenticeship in Italy, only returning to act again in 2024
