Russia, Ukraine negotiations end quickly after Sunday surprise attack

Negotiations in Istanbul between Russia and Ukraine ended quickly on Monday in the wake of a surprise attack on Russian airbases deep inside Russian territory.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that negotiators “exchanged documents through the Turkish side, and we are preparing a new release of prisoners of the war,” according to the Associated Press.

The negotiations saw no significant breakthroughs. Moscow continues to insist on the surrender of the four territories it annexed in 2022 and an end to Kyiv’s NATO aspirations.

Ukraine, for its part, refuses to cede territory or reverse course on its attempts to join NATO.
