Limp Bizkit bassist Sam Rivers has died at the age of 48, the band confirmed in a statement shared on social media Saturday. “Today we lost our brother,” the post read. “From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced. His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous.”

Questions over Sam Rivers’ cause of death

In the statement, the group did not reveal a cause of death, though Rivers had faced serious health problems in the past. In 2015, he left the band after being diagnosed with liver disease related to alcohol use, later undergoing a liver transplant two years later. No link between those earlier issues and his death has been confirmed.

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Rivers co-founded Limp Bizkit in 1994 alongside his cousin John Otto and frontman Fred Durst. Known for his muscular bass lines and stage presence, he helped define the nu-metal sound that propelled the band to global success at the turn of the millennium.
