It is finally July.
The MLB season reaches the All-Star break in under two weeks, but more importantly, the trade deadline will be at the end of the month on July 31.
Some teams know that they will be buying at the deadline and make a push to the postseason while others know they will more than likely punt the rest of the season and sell at the deadline.
The San Diego Padres, though, are in a tricky position. The Padres are 45-39 and just one game back of the St. Louis Cardinals for the final playoff spot. Additionally, San Diego has to worry about what’s behind them as well. The San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds are right on the Padres’ tail in a crowded wild card race.
In a CBS Sports article from Dayn Perry, Perry named San Diego as one of the bubble teams that face a difficult decision at this year’s deadline.
“It’s left to question how much the Padres have left to trade when it comes to being a buyer, but their status as a buyer seems certain. Lead exec A.J. Preller is very much a go-for-it kind of leader, and the Padres at this writing are right on the cusp of playoff position,” Perry said.
It seems as if the Padres will lean toward buying at the deadline if the Padres can stay within a short distance of teams like the Cardinals in the wild card race. If San Diego has a collapse over the next couple weeks, it could be a different story.
