A gunman on a small boat opened fire on patrons at a waterfront bar in Southport, North Carolina, killing 3 and wounding 8.

The shooting happened at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday near the downtown marina, authorities confirmed.

The gunman, who arrived by boat along the Cape Fear River, paused outside the venue and unleashed gunfire into the crowd before fleeing via the Intracoastal Waterway.

ChyAnn Ketchum, the city’s public information officer, said U.S. Coast Guard personnel spotted someone matching the shooter’s description unloading a boat at a public ramp in neighboring Oak Island. The individual was detained and later transferred to Southport law enforcement for questioning.

Victims have not been named and the suspect hasn’t been identified yet.
