Fans should enjoy Stephen Curry’s greatness while he’s still competing in the big leagues.

The Golden State Warriors’ superstar guard is 37 years old, making it reasonable to suggest that his time in the NBA is nearing its end.

However, Curry’s father, Dell, provided his son and the public with a surprising update regarding the four-time NBA champion’s retirement status.

“Absolutely (Curry can play well into his 40s), just because he can shoot the basketball, and he’s going to require attention,” the former Charlotte Hornets guard told Responsible Gambler’s DJ Siddiqui in a recent interview. “Even if you put him in the corner at 40, 41 years old, you have to guard him. That means that he’s creating space for other guys around him.”

“If you can shoot the basketball, there’s a team that can use you in today’s NBA. But if you’re Steph Curry, I think you’re going to be able to play until you say, ‘I’m done.’

“He still loves the game. He’s a competitive guy. He wants to win another title, so we’re not even close to that window yet. But when the time comes, I think he’ll make the right decision.”

Curry already announced his intent to continue playing high-level basketball after the Warriors’ second-round playoff loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Still, it’s shocking to hear that the 16-year veteran could potentially compete in the NBA for five or more seasons.

Although Curry possesses the skill set necessary to enjoy a superhuman NBA career, there’s always a possibility that the Davidson product could feel content with his professional accomplishments in two to three years (11-time All-Star, two-time scoring champion, two-time MVP, and 11-time All-NBA member, to name a few), and move on from the sport that brought him tremendous joy.

That said, it’ll all be up to Curry at the end of the day. A strong desire to win his fifth championship and second Finals MVP award could just as easily keep the awe-inspiring perimeter shooter in the NBA for several more years.

One thing is certain, though: Curry will undoubtedly return for the 2025-26 campaign.
