Democratic Texas Rep. Lloyd Doggett will not seek reelection in 2026, he announced on Friday.
His decision follows the Supreme Court’s approval of a new set of district maps in the Lone Star State that redraw the lines to favor Republicans in an additional five districts. He currently represents the 37th district, which includes much of Austin.
“I will continue working with the same urgency and determination as if next year were my last, which in public office it will be,” he said in a statement. “After that, I will seek new ways to join my neighbors in making a difference in the only town I have ever called home.”
His move follows not only Texas’s redistricting, but that of other red states, as part of a broader push from the GOP to tip the scales in their favor for 2026.
