It’s the end of the road for The Who – the iconic British group will head out for a string of shows this summer for one final time. The touring has taken its toll on the two surviving members: Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, who have racked up thousands of concerts since their humble beginnings as Mod scenesters the High Numbers in the early 60s.
The Who’s final US shows
Now both into their 80s and feeling the physical toll of performing live for six decades (Daltrey has hearing issues and Townshend, tinnitus), the Who have confirmed that ‘The Song Is Over’ tour, which will see them perform in Italy, Canada and the United States, will be their last.
The tour kicks off in Italy on July 20 and winds up in the US, with the final show lined up for Las Vegas on September 28.
“Pete is still playing great guitar, the music’s still got the vitality that suits it, because it’s something about the way Pete’s music is written, the way it’s shaped, the sentiment behind it, it doesn’t seem to age like a lot of rock music does. Us out there performing for the last time is a thank you for fans. Let’s see if we survive this one,” Daltrey told journalists at a press conference in London this week.
“I’ve just finished a solo tour of the UK. I’ve got to say that touring America is a damn site easier than touring the UK. For some reason, the UK has made it as difficult as possible to go from A to B. In America, you seem to want to make it as easy as possible. But we are in the land of ‘no’. I don’t want to say it won’t happen, but equally I’m not confident in saying that there will be”.

Townshend added: “I agree completely. I really enjoyed the last tour that we did, but it was a strange one. We played a lot of open air gigs, but we had an insurance problem, which meant we couldn’t play some of the more classic places that one plays on a UK tour. The door is open to us. We could do a week at The O2, a couple of weeks at the Royal Albert Hall, but we don’t do consecutive shows. We like to do a show and take a break.”
Singer Daltrey explained that he has to take a day off between gigs “on doctor’s orders” to protect his throat and voice. “I can’t do consecutive shows. After every two gigs I need to have three days off. Otherwise I’ll wreck my voice and will not be able to sing.”
