Over twenty years ago, in 2014, one of television’s most successful series began: House M.D., created by David Shore and aired until 2012. Following the success of ER with George Clooney, it became one of the most iconic medical dramas on TV. Starring Hugh Laurie as the brilliant but antisocial Dr. Gregory House, the show stood out not only for its intriguing medical diagnoses but also for the emotional and professional dynamic between House and the hospital director, Dr. Lisa Cuddy, portrayed by Lisa Edelstein.
From the first episode, their relationship reflects tension from clashes over professional decisions, but also attraction. House is a medical genius, misanthropic and rebellious, who disregards rules, while Cuddy embodies a competent administrator with unusual patience for dealing with his excesses. Despite being difficult and constantly challenging her, they had known each other before he joined the hospital, and it was her decision to hire him—making her one of the few people he respects.
It isn’t until the seventh season that they begin a relationship, which is marked by the same recurring issues: House’s inability to handle emotional intimacy, his addiction to Vicodin, and his self-destructive tendencies. Unable to cope with the pain of their breakup, he crashes his car into her home. She threatens legal action if he approaches her again and disappears from the series.
A new chapter
In reality, Lisa Edelstein had to leave the show before it ended due to budget problems. The production refused to maintain her high salary, and in 2011 she left the series and joined The Good Wife.
This wasn’t her only role after the successful medical drama. She also played Abby McCarthy in Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce and appeared in several episodes of The Good Doctor, among other projects. However, the actress seems to have stepped back from the spotlight to focus on one of her greatest passions: painting.
