Juggling showbiz and family life has never been easy. Either for parents involved in entertainment or their offspring. The late nights, smoky clubs, loud music, strange people… it’s another world for kids, even if your mom is the star of the show.
Broadway actress Jennie Harney-Fleming knows only too well. She has just brought the house down at a New York theater and was performing her encore, a version of the jazz standard Feeling Good, when she was interrupted by a pleading voice in the crowd: “I want to go home!”
It’s a new day, it’s a new dawn…
She knew immediately who it was – her three-year-old daughter Olivia, who had come to see her mom perform. But it was late, way past the toddler’s bedtime, and she was already dropping off.
Jennie reacted instantly: “Come here, baby. Come here, Olivia. Come to Mommy. It’s too loud, I know.”
The singer picked her sleepy daughter up, slung her over her shoulder and like a true pro, carried on with the song.
A video of the moment, a surprise addition to the show, went viral. And Harney-Fleming later posted on her Instagram page: “Gotta say I’m proud of this moment. The mom/career juggle is often a struggle. But there are some moments where the two worlds collide and you know you’ll never forget them. Some of you saw the clip from the end of my concert at the Holmdel Theatre company. Here it is again. Thanks for the continued support friends ! This one’s for the moms!”
