As a two-time Academy Award winner, Tom Hanks will have enjoyed a glass of champagne or two in his time. However, the “Forrest Gump” star’s true preference is adding even more bubbles to a glass of regular fizz.

In an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Hanks revealed how he stumbled upon an unusual cocktail while celebrating at an event several years ago.

Tom Hanks’ unusual cocktail

“I had a little bit of Diet Coke in a glass but they brought champagne around in nice flutes, it was like the last episode of “The Bachelor”, the 69-year-old explained. “And I just had this glass of Diet Coke and I said, ‘oh, just give me a shot of champagne in there, for crying out loud.’”

Those in attendance were quick to mock Hanks for his choice of beverage but it was he who had the last laugh, it turns out.

“Everybody said, ‘You are insane.’ And I said, ‘I may be insane but I want to celebrate,’ so I had a sip of this. And it was delicious.”

“The Late Show” being “The Late Show,” Hanks was given the chance to prepare his unlikely signature drink, with the Californian offering some important tips for creating the right mix.

How to make a ‘Diet Cocaine’

In case you were wondering and fancy trying it yourself, the champagne should be “about a third” of the Diet Coke. “Any cola” product can be used, with Hanks opting for Diet Coke due to having type 2 diabetes.

“Everybody at the table tried it and said, ‘You know what, that’s pretty good,’” concluded Hanks, referring back to his initial introduction to the ‘cocktail,’ which he himself creatively dubbed a ‘Diet Cocaine’ (Coke-agne).

Whether it catches on or not, Hanks’ fizzy creation proves that sometimes the most unexpected combinations can deliver a surprising splash of enjoyment. Just like his movies, some might say.
