President Trump confirmed Sunday that he offered to send U.S. troops into Mexico to help eradicate the country’s illegal drug trade and said the country’s president rejected the offer because she is “afraid of the cartels.”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Saturday that she rejected Trump’s offer to send troops into Mexico to combat drug trafficking.
She said Trump told her: âHow can we help you fight drug trafficking? I propose that the United States military come in and help you.â And you know what I said to him? âNo, President Trump.ââ
Sheinbaum also said: âSovereignty is not for sale. … We can work together, but you in your territory and us in ours.”
Trump said Sunday on Air Force One that âitâs trueâ that he made trhe offer, The Hill newspaper reports.
However, he claimed that Sheinbaum is âso afraid of the cartel she canât walk,â then added that he believes she is âa lovely woman.â
âShe is so afraid of the cartels she canât even think straight,â Trump said.
