The Trump administration confirmed on Friday that it is exploring whether the federal government could assume control of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City.
The memorial is currently located on Port Authority–owned land.Â
Since opening in 2014, a public charity that is chaired by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has managed the facility.
In the past, Trump has said he wanted to make the site a national monument.Â
According to the Associated Press, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum said the federal government cannot take control of the site unilaterally.Â
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul frowned upon the idea of the federal government managing the site.
“The 9/11 Memorial belongs to New Yorkers — the families, survivors, and first responders who have carried this legacy for more than two decades and ensured we never forget,” Hochul said in a statement. “Before he meddles with this sacred site, the President should start by honoring survivors and supporting the families of victims.”
