Trump hints U.S. aid to Argentina continued on election results

President Donald Trump on Tuesday suggested that American financial aid to Argentina would be contingent on the success of President Javier Milei’s success in his midterm elections.

Trump made the remarks during a White House meeting with Milei on Tuesday as the Treasury prepares a bailout to stabilize the Argentinian economy.

“If he loses, we are not going to be generous with Argentina,” Trump said, according to The Hill. “If he does win, we’re going to be very helpful. And if he doesn’t win, we’re not going to waste our time. Because you have somebody whose philosophy has no chance of making Argentina great again.”

Milei himself is not facing reelection this year, though he has seen his approval rating dip in recent months, despite combating inflation. He won election on an extreme libertarian platform in 2023.
