President Donald Trump on Monday urged border czar Tom Homan to arrest Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., amid ongoing riots in Los Angeles, calling him “grossly incompetent.”

“I would do it, if I were Tom,” he said in response to a reporter question at the White House.

Newsom responded furiously on X, saying “The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor. This is a day I hoped I would never see in America. I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican this is a line we cannot cross as a nation — this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.”

The exchange followed Newsom explicitly stating “Tom, arrest me” to Homan during a clip on MSNBC.

Riots have raged through Los Angeles over the weekend in the aftermath of ICE raids, including some on Home Depot locations at the suggestion of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller.
