President Trump’s federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department ended after 30 days on Wednesday, but the National Guard and federal agencies will remain in Washington, D.C., at least through November.
House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed that he will not try to extend Trump’s takeover, meaning authority over MPD will return to Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser, WJLA reported. However, the Republican-controlled chamber is considering over a dozen bills that would give the federal government’s legislative branch more authority over the city.
The Trump administration has touted that more than 2,000 arrests have been made since the federal takeover of the capital began last month.
“Our great men and women of law enforcement, both federal and local working together as they should, made an arrest on a warrant for assault with the intent to kill. The subject shot two adult males after an altercation,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
