Two postseason hopefuls in the National League begin a three-game weekend set on “Friday Night Baseball,” as the Cardinals host the Diamondbacks.

Since the calendar flipped to May, St. Louis has been playing its best baseball of the season. Entering the weekend, the Cardinals have won 13 of their last 17 games, closing in on the Cubs in the NL Central.

The lineup is flush with productive young hitters, among them 28-year-old Brendan Donovan, whose .323 batting average is the sixth-highest in baseball. Shortstop Masyn Winn joins Donovan to form a sparkling middle infield duo and anchor the top of the lineup.

Arizona is led by Corbin Carroll, the third-year pro emerging as a bona fide MVP candidate. Carroll leads the Diamondbacks with a .945 OPS, 15 home runs, and six triples, putting last year’s early season slump behind him.

Zac Gallen (5.14 ERA) is scheduled to get the ball for Arizona, while the Cardinals are set to counter with veteran right-hander Miles Mikolas (3.77 ERA).
