Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Whatley on Thursday officially announced his bid for a North Carolina Senate seat, which comes after receiving multiple high-profile endorsements.
Whatley is running to replace North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, who is not seeking reelection next year. The announcement also comes after his former RNC co-chair Lara Trump reportedly passed on her own bid last week.
The chairman has already been endorsed by President Donald Trump, the National Republican Senatorial Committee and Senate Majority Leader John Thune. He will likely face former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper if he wins the primary.
“I’m excited to announce my campaign for the U.S. Senate to represent the great state of North Carolina,” Whatley said in a post on X. “I am humbled and excited to begin this campaign, and I would be honored to earn your vote, your support, and your prayers. Let’s get to work.”
Trump, in his endorsement, hailed Whatley’s role in helping energize projects like sending relief to North Carolina after it was devastated by storms. He also celebrated Whatley’s role in helping him get elected back to the White House last year, and stated that he believes the chairman would make an “unbelievable Senator from North Carolina.”
