White House says Trump cancelled Bedminster vacation to work on Ukraine-Russia peace talks

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday told reporters that President Donald Trump has canceled his August vacation to Bedminster, New Jersey, in order to continue working on setting up meetings with Russia and Ukraine.

Presidents typically take a vacation in August while Congress is on its annual August recess, and Trump took a 17-day vacation at his Bedminster resort during his first term, The Hill reported.

Leavitt said that Trump considered trying to continue arranging the peace talks during his New Jersey trip but opted to remain at the White House instead.

“This is normally the time when the president goes on vacation, but not this president,” she said in a press briefing. “There [were] discussions about him working from Bedminster for a couple of weeks, but he decided against it. He’s a man on a mission. He wants to move. Get things done quickly. He wants to strike when the iron is hot.”

The decision comes after Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, last week and then European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, at the White House on Monday.

Both meetings centered around ending the years-long war in Ukraine.
