Roblox has become one of the most popular free online gaming platforms in the world. In 2024 alone, the company reported 88.9 million daily users – about 40% of them under the age of 13. That figure, says Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, has turned Roblox into a “breeding ground for predators.” His office has now opened a criminal investigation into the company.
“Roblox is exploiting our children while exposing them to the most dangerous kinds of harm and enabling their abuse,” Uthmeier said in a video posted on social media. “It’s a breeding ground for predators to access kids.”

What is Roblox?
Roblox is a free online platform where users can play and create games, socialize, and explore simulated worlds. Although it’s free to join, players can make in-game purchases using “Robux,” a virtual currency bought with real money.

According to Uthmeier, the platform’s design – combined with what he described as weak child protection and poor content moderation – has led to multiple cases of child abuse. His office claims that sexually explicit material often circulates on Roblox, putting young players at risk.
“The disturbing allegations against the gaming platform include negligence in verifying user age and failures in content moderation, which have allowed sexually explicit material to bypass filters and spread across the platform,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement. It also warned that some predators use Robux as a form of bribery to lure minors.
Florida’s investigation and its potential impact
Uthmeier said the criminal investigation aims to uncover details of the “criminal activity” taking place on the platform, as well as to gather evidence on “the predators out there and the victims who are being abused.”
For now, Roblox has not issued a public statement, and the platform is expected to continue operating normally while the probe unfolds.
