From the ‘80s through the early 2000s, Madonna lit up the big screen in a string of roles that pushed boundaries — but one rock star says he passed on the chance to get intimate with her on camera.

Simple Minds frontman turns down Madonna sex scene

Jim Kerr, frontman for the Scottish band Simple Minds, revealed he turned down a small role in the 1996 film Evita because it involved a sex scene with Madonna. That decision also meant walking away from what would have been his big-screen debut.

“I’ve not been in a movie, but I was nearly in a movie once,” Kerr said in a recent interview. “I was offered a role in that Madonna, Eva Peron thing, Evita, by the director Alan. [Parker]. There was a short scene and he wanted me to… play.”

Kerr admitted he initially thought the offer was a joke. “At the time, of course, Madonna was a big deal and all that, but I had to take my trousers off and Madonna’s there,” he said, laughing. “I didn’t say that right. I had to take my trousers off and they weren’t paying me enough.”

Madonna cements reputation as actress

Evita, which tells the tragic story of Argentina’s First Lady Eva Perón, starred Madonna alongside Antonio Banderas as Che Guevara. The film was a global box office hit, winning the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and an Academy Award for Best Original Song, while cementing Madonna’s reputation as a serious actress.
