The New York Yankees could be in the market for an ace near the MLB trade deadline. They are threatening to run away with the American League East, but will need to make additions if they want to win the World Series.
The Yankees have been without their ace Gerrit Cole all season. Luis Gil is still working his way back to the mound. Max Fried has been great for the team, but the Yankees have yet to make a move to really replace Cole.
FanSided’s Adam Weinrib suggested the Yankees trade for Texas Rangers superstar pitcher Jacob deGrom. He has dealt with many injuries in the past, but this season he looks like himself, and the Rangers could be willing to part ways with him if they fall out of contention.
“It will be near-impossible to fortify the Yankees’ rotation with a bonafide ace this summer, but they’ll certainly be on the hunt for a high-upside righty to at least approximate the possibility,” wrote Weinrib. “Nathan Eovaldi of the Texas Rangers would be a great add, if their offense continues to sputter. But if the Yankees are willing to take on Eovaldi’s money (big if), and if the Rangers decide to sell (smaller if), there’s a way to pay a bit more cash and make (New York) Mets fans miserable.
“Surely … you guys are over Jacob deGrom by now, right? He meant nothing to you, never won you a ring or anything? Seeing him in pinstripes won’t make you feel like you’re getting peeled like an apple, right? Ok, great, because we’ll be taking him now.”

If deGrom signed with the Yankees, Mets fans would surely have some strong thoughts. However, the move for the Yankees would be more about winning the World Series than getting at the Mets.
The Rangers are 29-31 and still in the postseason picture. However, if they fall out of the race, they could try to offload deGrom’s $185 million contract. He has a 2.34 ERA in 12 starts this season and could be a key player on the Yankees. He is a four-time All-Star and two-time Cy Young Award winner. His 12 starts are already more than he’s made since 2022.
Injuries have hurt deGrom career track, but his trade value is looking high again. The Rangers could try to capitalize on that if their season starts to slip away before the July 31 trade deadline.
