The New York Yankees find themselves in the market to add some juice to the lineup.
Following the devastating ankle injury that landed third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera on the injured list, the Yankees activated veteran DJ LeMahieu.
While the front office may have confidence in LeMahieu, the last three seasons paint a completely different picture.
That’s why it’s not outside the realm of possibilities that New York looks to make a splash addition to the hot corner.
One such option is a potential deal for Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suarez, an idea proposed by Heavy’s Mike Ostrowski.
“It’s fine to have some contact-first guys in the lineup, but right now, that’d involve D.J. having a major turnaround after hitting .243 last year. Suárez is not one for overly high average either, but he was better in that regard last season,” Ostrowski wrote. “The New York Yankees would likely need to part with a ranked prospect or two to get this deal done, but if it gets them back to the Fall Classic, few people would second-guess it.”
The 33-year-old slugger is having a strong campaign to being the 2025 season. Though he’s hitting .210, Suarez has 13 home runs and 31 RBI to go along with a 124 OPS+ across 44 games. In 2024, Suarez hit 30 home runs with a .788 OPS.
Though some of his underlying metrics, such as whiff and strikeout rate leave much to be desired, he ranks in the 91st percentile in average exit velocity and the 96th percentile in both barrel rate and hard-hit percentage, per Statcast.
Suarez is in the final year of a seven-year, $66 million deal, per Spotrac, so he would certainly be a rental for the remainder of the season.
With a four-game lead in the division entering Friday’s games, the Yankees need to consider all options if they want to make another World Series appearance.
