The New York Yankees’ starting rotation has stepped up in the absence of Luis Gil and Gerrit Cole. However, they may still want to add an arm at the deadline.

Cole will miss the entire season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Gil is still on the injured list with a lat strain. Max Fried, Carlos Rodón and Ryan Yarbrough have played well to help keep the Yankees atop the American League East. However, Marcus Stroman is seemingly out of chances and Carlos Carrasco was recently released.

The Yankees could benefit from adding depth in order to make another deep run in October. Empire Sports Media’s Ryan Garcia suggested the Yankees could acquire Reid Detmers from the Los Angeles Angels. Detmers has a 6.04 ERA, but the Yankees could get him back to pitching like he did in 2022 and 2023.

Detmers made his debut in 2021. In 2022, he started 25 games, pitching to a 3.77 ERA. Since then he has seen a decline, but Garcia noted his fastball usage may be the reason why.

“The Angels seemed to have increased his fastball usage, a decision that’s a bit puzzling given how good his slider and curveball are,” wrote Garcia. “The Yankees could have him increase the usage rate of his secondaries and help him get even more whiffs, and while acquiring a proven left-hander would be a safer bet, the organization traditionally targets relievers whom they can improve over guys that are high-priced targets at the deadline.Ā Mark Leiter Jr. and Lou Trivino are great examples of those acquisitions panning out, and I believe Detmers could be another success story.”

Detmers has been working out of the bullpen this year. He could continue to do that, but serve as a starter should the Yankees suffer any more injuries or setbacks.Ā He is under club control through 2028, andĀ Spotrac projects him to earnĀ an eight-year, $101 million deal when he hits the open market.
