President Donald Trump on Monday kept a promise he made last year by signing an executive order that bans federal funding for gain-of-function research, which is believed to be at the heart of the COVID-19 lab leak in Wuhan, China.

Two years ago, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., announced that he formally sent a criminal referral to the Justice Department regarding Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director, over his testimony about his role in gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Lab in China.

In March it was announced that the Trump Administration has begun a renewed push to get to the bottom of the origins of COVID-19.
