President Donald Trump on Monday told reporters at the White House that the United States is prepared to accept as many as 600,000 Chinese students as part of his trade talks with Beijing.
âWeâre going to allow, itâs very important, 600,000 students,â Trump continued. âWeâre going to get along with China. But itâs a different relationship that we have now with China.â
Trump previously commented that the United States would accept Chinese college students but did not give a number regarding how many students would be accepted on visas. In 2024, there were more than 270,000 Chinese students enrolled at U.S. universities.
Trump’s comments drew pushback and indicated a change from earlier in the year, when Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he planned to âaggressivelyâ revoke visas from Chinese students, particularly those âwith connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields,â according to The Hill.Â
âWe should not let in 600,000 CHINESE students to attend American colleges and universities that may be loyal to the CCP,â Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) posted on the social platform X.
Fox News host Laura Ingraham asked Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick about it Monday night.
âMr. Secretary, with all due respect, how is allowing 600,000 students from the communist country of China putting America first?â
