From super hero to super son: Captain America star Chris Evans sat out the premiere of his latest movie, the Ethan Coen comedy Honey Don’t!, to savor a special occasion with his family.

In a post on his Instagram Stories, Evans revealed he couldn’t make it to the Cannes Film Festival for Honey Don’t!’s world debut last weekend, as he had chosen to remain in the U.S. for mother Lisa’s landmark birthday celebrations.

“Some things you just can’t miss”

“I wish I could’ve been with my incredible cast and filmmakers at Cannes,” Evans said, per E! News, “but it was my mother’s 70th birthday and there are some things you just can’t miss! Congrats everyone!!”

In Evans’s absence, his fellow cast members Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza and Charlie Day posed for the cameras at Cannes on Saturday. It was Plaza’s first appearance on the red carpet since the death of her husband, Jeff Baena, in January.

What is Honey Don’t! about? When is it out in the U.S.?

Directed and co-written by Coen, Honey Don’t! stars Qualley as “a small-town private investigator who delves into a series of strange deaths tied to a mysterious church”, says Focus Features, the film’s distributor.

Evans plays Reverend Drew Devlin, a character described by The Hollywood Reporter’s Lovia Gyarkye as a “lecherous religious cult leader”.

Honey Don’t! is due to be released in U.S. movie theaters on August 22.

“Deep connection with my family”

Evans, an actor best known for playing Steve Rogers/Captain America in multiple films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has previously spoken of the close relationship he enjoys with his family.

I have a deep connection with my family and the value of those bonds,” the 43-year-old told an interview with Esquire in 2017. ”I’ve always loved stories about people who put their families before themselves. It’s such a noble endeavor.”

Mom talked Evans into Captain America role

Lisa – who is the artistic director at her son’s childhood theatre company, Concord Youth Theatre – then spoke to Esquire in 2020 about the part she played in persuading Evans to take on the high-profile role of Captain America.

His biggest fear was losing his anonymity,” she told the magazine. “He said, ‘I have a career now where I can do work I really like. I can walk my dog. Nobody bothers me. Nobody wants to talk to me. I can go wherever I want. And the idea of losing that is terrifying to me.’

“He would call and ask for my advice. I said to him, ‘Look, you want to do acting work for the rest of your life? If you do this part, you will have the opportunity. You’ll never have to worry about paying the rent.

“If you take the part, you just have to decide, It’s not going to affect my life negatively – it will enable it.’”

Since he first played Captain America in 2011’s The First Avenger, Evans has portrayed the character in a total of 11 movies, most recently 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
